It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of Joel Taller on Saturday, May 13, 2017, with his family by his side. Joel will be dearly missed and affectionately remembered by his loving wife Gaye, their children, his extended family, and his friends and acquaintances, including many of us in the natural health industry who worked with him.
Joel was a Partner at Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office, practising primarily in the area of health product regulation. As CHFA’s counsel for many years, Joel was a significant contributor to the regulatory framework since its inception. He was a key part of CHFA’s many successes and achievements over the years. His keen insights and broad knowledge were invaluable at CHFA Regulatory Forums, Health Canada meetings and stakeholder consultations.
“Joel was an important part of the work that CHFA accomplished over the years and his advice and support will be greatly missed by all of us,” said Helen Long, President of CHFA. “It’s hard to imagine a time when Joel was not involved with CHFA, and it’s hard to imagine not having him with us, not only as our legal counsel but as a trusted adviser and friend.”
Joel started his career in law in 1983 as an articling student. He was called to the bar in 1985 and practised continuously with Gowling, becoming a partner in 1991. During his 34-year career, Joel built a preeminent regulatory practice, developing and nurturing a strong team of young lawyers and professionals. Joel was an adviser on areas related to regulatory compliance and an expert in the field of natural health, nutritional supplements, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices. Joel also made significant contributions to the leadership of the firm, formally and informally, culminating in his service as a firm trustee.
Joel will be remembered for his love of family, his generous spirit, his support of others, his mentorship, his professionalism and his leadership. He will be sincerely missed by so many in the natural health sector.
